Starting in 1967 it was held at the Montreux Casino, which burned down after a Frank Zappa performance. It lasted only three days then but now a fortnight of musical delights grace the stages.
In the 70’s it opened up it’s musical tastes and is now considered a world music festival covering many genres and attracting an audience in excess of 200,00 people. This is a big musical extravaganza.
It now hosts at the Convention Centre with main two stages, the Stravinsky Auditorium and Miles Davis Hall. With 16 days of music, 12 venues in total with 10 free, over 1000 hours of music and over a 1000 musicians, you’re basically spoilt for choice.
Oh, and there’s also the boats. Situated along the banks of Lake Geneva. Themed shows are held on boats cruising the lake, along with train cars travelling throughout the region.
Obviously the biggest jazz names have played at this epic festival and no doubt it will continue the open-mindedness of its musical dimension.
